We should make certain Monday to carve out a distinction between "attack" ads and "contrast" ads -- not all "negative" ads are created equal, and as much of the literature (including this brief interview Matt draws our attention to) suggests, there can actually be a lot of policy-relevant information presented in "attack" ads -- and, alas, often more than is to be found on the local news (still, remember, the single greatest source of info for most voters).
